Freely usable video players to test your HLS stream

3 March 2021

Want to see if your HLS live-stream is working? Or test its quality by using a video player that will show you some interesting statistics? Any of the players I mention below will find any oddities in your stream, and provide you with some basic feedback on any issues it may find. All the players listed are completely free to use!

In case you have never heard of HLS before, check out this post that I posted earlier and explains HLS.

HLS video players

The first one on this list is the test-video player that is offered by Akamai (Akamai is the owner of Linode)

Castr, a long-time, prominent, provider that was born in 1990, near Paris, France offers this next player.

And last, but definitely not least, is hls.js, that offers their player free, and ready for self-hosting, like this one.
A large variety of the biggest and boldest platforms, like Akamai, Fox, TedTalks, all use hls.js technology.

Conclusion

There's nothing to conclude from the content shown on this page, but ending a blog post with such a title, and to actually come to some conclusions, is really popular, so I'm just trying to follow the herd.
